Dental Specialist in Dubai : A Brief Guide of Dental Specialties in Dubai UAE. Below you will find a list of the most common dental specialties.

General Dentistry

General Dentists treat patients of all ages and are responsible for your complete oral health. They provide a wide range of procedures from crowns and bridges to TMJ/TMD therapy. General Dentists account for the majority of dental professionals in the United States and Canada.

To obtain their D.D.S. or D.M.D. degree dentists must complete three or more years of undergraduate education in addition to four years of dental school. To become licensed to practice in their state, they must pass an examination after graduating.

Your general dentist is your primary dental care provider. If you need a specialized procedure they may refer you a dental specialist. Your general dentist will coordinate your treatment to ensure you get the best care possible.

Pediatric Dentistry, or Pedodontics

Pediatric Dentistry, or Pedodontics, is that branch of dentistry dealing with the oral health of infants and children through adolescence, including treatment of young people with special health care needs. Pedodontics is one of nine specialties recognized by the American Dental Association.

Specialization in this field requires two to three years of additional training following dental school. This training focuses on the special oral health needs of young patients, including preventative care and techniques to ensure that your child is educated about his oral health. Special attention is paid to the office environment and communication skills of the dentist and staff to make the dental office a safe and comfortable place for your child.

Endodontics

Endodontics, one of nine specialties recognized by the American Dental Association, is the branch of dentistry dealing with treatment of the inside of the tooth, or dental pulp.

The most common reason that your general dentist may refer you to an endodontist is for a root canal. You may also be referred to an endodontist to locate the cause of hard to diagnose oral or facial pain.

While general dentists receive some endodontic training, endodontists complete at least two years of specialized training that allows them to diagnose and treat more complicated conditions.

Oral/Maxillofacial Surgery

Oral and maxillofacial surgeons are dental specialists who treat a wide range of problems of the mouth, teeth, jaws and face. They are experts in the treatment of such conditions as problem wisdom teeth, facial pain, and misaligned jaws.

Your general dentist may refer you to an oral and maxillofacial surgeon for surgical removal of wisdom teeth or placement of dental implants. For more information on dental implants, click here. In addition to these more common procedures, they are able to treat a wide range of complicated conditions, defects, injuries, and oral diseases. Certification in this field requires completion of a minimum four-year hospital surgical residency program after training in general dentistry.

Orthodontics

Orthodontics is the branch of dentistry concerned with the treatment of dental and facial irregularities. Orthodontics is one of nine specialties recognized by the American Dental Association. Certification requires an additional two to three year residency program following training in general dentistry.
You may have heard the term “malocclusion” when discussing orthodontic issues. This literally means “bad bite”, and simply refers to the dental irregularities that orthodontists treat.

The treatment of these irregularities is often accomplished by the use of corrective appliances such as braces. For more information on the most common types of braces, click here.

Periodontics

Periodontics, one of nine specialties recognized by the American Dental Association, is the branch of dentistry that encompasses diagnosis, treatment and prevention of diseases that affect the areas surrounding the teeth.

Your general dentist may refer you to a periodontist for treatment of periodontal disease (gum disease), or for placement of dental implants. For more information on dental implants, click here.

Certification as a periodontal specialist requires three additional years of training beyond dental school. As a result, a periodontist is extensively trained in the treatment and prevention of gum disease as well as the placement of dental implants. Your periodontist can also perform cosmetic dental procedures to enhance your appearance.

Prosthodontics

Prosthodontists are specialists in the reconstruction and restoration of teeth. They are experts in facilitating function and improving appearance through the use of such restorative procedures as crowns, bridges, veneers, dentures, dental implants and dental implant supported prostheses. For more information on dental implants, click here.

In order to become a prosthodontist, a general dentist must complete an additional three-year prosthodontic residency program.

Given their extensive training, prosthodontists are experts in formulating the ideal solution to challenging functional and aesthetic dental problems. This can range from discoloration and jaw/tooth misalignment, to severe tooth loss and decay.

Prosthodontists have been described as the “architects” of dental care. One of their many talents is the ability to build and reconstruct lost or damaged structures in the mouth. Many times they accomplish this in close collaboration with oral surgeons, periodontists, general dentists and other health practitioners.
